Careers Education - Teacher Resources
Careers education is a whole-school effort. The updated Gatsby framework emphasizes that delivering great careers guidance is not just the job of the careers adviser or leader – it’s “a whole-staff and whole-institution endeavour.” It needs support from leadership and ongoing staff development for teachers. At our school, every teacher and staff member has a role to play in preparing students for the future.
Four key things you (and your students) need to know
1. What post-16 and post-18/19 pathways are available for our students?
2. What are the needs of the current and future job market?
3. What careers can your subject lead to?
4. What skills does your subject develop and how does this relate to careers?
What things can be done to promote careers education within your department?
- Create Careers Display boards outside the rooms/hallways/around the school
- Display ‘Career Bio’s’ of subject department staff
- Give lessons activity/extra curricular activities a careers focus
- Involve family members and alumni on homework projects
- Careers Champions for each subject
- Specific projects to solve real-life problems using research/teamwork
- Videos from industry experts
- Guest speakers in lessons
