Super Skier

Hedingham School Year 10 student, Amber Gladin, was delighted to hear this week that she is now the third fastest skier in her age category in England! Fifteen year-old Amber who lives in Great Yeldham, took part at the end of May in the Club National competitions held in Norwich and Ipswich, competing against skiers from all over the country to achieve this accolade. She commented, ’I felt really happy that I was third in the country, but upset too because I could have skied better and been first as I was only 0.02 seconds off the time for top place!’

Amber competes in three disciplines, Slalom, GS or Giant Slalom and Super G which is an extended GS. She spent 3 months earlier this year training in Pila in Italy with the British Ski Academy and works very hard to cope with all her ski training and also to keep her school work up to standard. When in Italy, Amber has a tutor and spends the afternoons doing lessons linked to her GCSE’s. She trains in the morning on the slopes and does fitness training in the evenings so has little time for anything else other than eating and sleeping! When in England, Amber trains two nights a week with the Hemel Hempstead Ski Race Club which obviously involves her in a lot of travelling.

This week Amber competed in the British Individual Schools competition in Manchester, representing Hedingham School, and won her age category and came second overall out of the female skiers of all ages. Next year Amber hopes to spend longer training in Italy to make maximum use of the snow available. She says, ‘Skiing is my main priority after schooling. I want to be the best and ski on the World Cup circuit.’ With Amber’s talent and determination this is very likely to happen and everyone at Hedingham School wishes her success in her endeavor!
