Sir Trevor Brooking opens Hedingham School and Sixth Form’s new facility in Essex

Former England international Sir Trevor Booking officially opened the 3G artificial grass playing surface on Tuesday 16 th March at Hedingham School.

The scheme provides a floodlit Under-16 artificial pitch, which can be used as two or three smaller pitches or for training. In addition improvement works to the school’s field will make it available for community use giving access to three further pitches including a full size pitch. This facility will be a community resource in addition to curriculum use by the school and its partner primaries.

At the opening event Sir Trevor and the school’s invited guests were able see a showcase of events by some of the young people who will benefit from this facility, including:

  • Sixth Form Students undertaking the CSLA qualification coaching pupils from some of Hedingham’s Partner Primary Schools
  • An exhibition by one of the school’s girls football teams. Hedingham School has had great success this year with the girls Under-14s reaching the last 16 of the Essex Cup
  • A display by one of the school’s very successful boys’ teams.

This display was preceded by speeches from Sir Trevor, John Panayi (Head Teacher), Paul Finch (Leader of PE) and Matt Cooper (Sixth Form Student). Sir Trevor officially opened the facility by cutting the ribbon on a specially prepared plaque commemorating the event. He spent over an hour with the students on the pitch. Talking to them, joining in the sessions and encouraging them to continue to participate and strive to improve their sporting skills to their full potential.

Sir Trevor Brooking said: “I am delighted to be officially opening the excellent new 3G playing surface at Hedingham School.

“It is vital that young children have facilities where they can be safe and enjoy fun, quality coaching. For many youngsters, playing football can teach them life skills like communication and teamwork, but for a very talented few, facilities such as these may be where the next generation of players will develop their skills.

“The staff at the school deserve huge credit for securing the Football Foundation grant and the partnership funding which has enabled this project to become a reality.”

Who is my other half? World Book Day at Hedingham School -15 March 2010

Students and staff at Hedingham School have been celebrating this year’s World Book Day with a variety of fun, competitions and activities designed to promote interest in books and challenging reading.

Nearly 80 members of staff were allocated badges to wear over the week. Each badge had one half of a famous pair printed on it. Students were challenged to find as many pairs as they could and submit their findings to the Learning Centre by the end of the week. Students were very busy hunting for Romeos for a Juliet, Desdemona for Othello, Laurel for Hardy and Peter for Tinkerbell!
