Helping the Homeless - 14 December 2009

Hedingham School students have an excellent record of fund raising for charities and are proud of work they have done to support others less fortunate than themselves. Each term a non-uniform day is organised by the School Council and students chose a charity they feel is worthwhile. This term they have decided to raise money for Jimmy’s Shelter in Cambridge, a charity which supports homeless people of all ages.

The plight of the homeless is especially poignant at this time of year when so many people are preoccupied with their families, food, decorations and presents.

As well as raising much needed funds, School Council also decided to ask students to bring in other donations which the shelter would find useful, such as food items and toiletries. On Friday 11 December it was heart warming to see students of all ages coming to school with biscuits, tea, tins of soup and beans, toothpaste and shower gel and even dog treats to put under the school Christmas tree. Council members had a busy morning packing hundreds of items up into boxes so that they can be delivered to Jimmy’s Shelter before Christmas.

In January it is hoped that one of the administrators from Jimmy’s Shelter will come down to Hedingham School to talk to students about the work they do for the homeless and to receive a cheque for the money raised on the non uniform day. The Council members hope to raise around £1000 which is the cost of running the shelter for a day. Special credit must go to Blake Cracknell, Chairperson of the Council and his Deputy David Cooper, who presented assemblies to every house group in the school explaining the work of Jimmy’s Shelter and asking students to bring in money and items to send for Christmas. They can be very proud of the response from the school community.
