Fairtrade Fortnight at Hedingham
During the two weeks after half term Hedingham school will be celebrating Fairtrade Fortnight with lots of exciting events and assemblies! This year’s campaign is to get people to swap their normal stuff for Fairtrade alternatives. So we will be swapping our footballs, at Hedingham School’s first even Fairtrade Football matches on Tuesday 23 February and Monday 1 March.
There will also be quizzes and competitions for students to take part in, as well as an opportunity to taste Fairtrade goodies on Friday 5 March. Look out for Fairtrade displays which will be going up around the school giving further details of events taking place.
The purpose of Fairtrade fortnight is to get more people talking about and buying Fairtrade products. Fairtrade is one way in which we can help improve the lives of producers in other countries whilst empowering students to ‘Think Global, Act Local’.

Year 8 PSHE Education Day BODY & SOUL (Personal Identity & Healthy Lifestyles)
On Wednesday 20 January, Year 8 were off their normal timetable to take part in PSHE sessions, which covered First Aid (from Mrs Trim & Ms Miley); advice and help from the school nurses (Donna & Sue) [they are also available in school every Monday lunchtime]; creating posters promoting Healthy Lifestyles (exercise; 5-a-day etc) [these are on display in school foyer].
For the afternoon session all students were in the hall to create their own ‘teenage hobo signs’; they heard about New York graffiti artist and painter Jean-Michel Basquiat/SAMO (whose father is from Haiti), and how words and symbols can be used in self-expressive art. Then they learnt about American hobo signs, and watched a terrific music video by Mrs Crawley’s sister on contemporary hobo signs, before creating their own specials signs and symbols.

This term they have decided to raise money for Jimmy’s Shelter in Cambridge, a charity which supports homeless people of all ages
Jack Petchey November 2009
Congratulations are in order for Lisa Hood, she is November’s Jack Petchey Award Winner.
Lisa was nominated for the Award for volunteering to work with Year 7 students during their Geography lessons to support them with their learning. This has involved working with members of the Geography Learning Area staff and with non-specialist staff, who teach Geography in KS3, as well as with Teaching Assistants. She has formed a very positive rapport with staff and younger students and proved herself to be an asset to the department. This is a real achievement when she only is able to attend one lesson per fortnight with many of the different learning groups.
Mr. Panayi presented Lisa with a Certificate, Badge and Cheque on Wednesday 2 December 2009.
Well Done Lisa!!!!
